For a long time, those unit offered only an audio communication relayed via the intercom panel to the audio intercom receiver, usually called intercom phone, from where the command to open the door would be made.
Present day external units can carry a video in black and white as well as in color, relaying the video signal to a video receiver, allowing for a formal and complete identification of the requesting person.
